Danganronpa Creator Endorses GTA 6 During Anime Expo 2026 Panel
During Spike Chunsoft's panel at Anime Expo 2026, series creator Kazutaka Kodaka made headlines by suggesting that fans disappointed by Danganronpa 2x2's surprise delay should occupy their time with Grand Theft Auto VI. The recommendation came as the studio announced the beloved PlayStation Vita classic would be pushed back from its originally scheduled 2026 release to Early 2027.
The Delay Announcement
While Danganronpa 2x2 was initially slated for release this year, Spike Chunsoft revealed the extended development timeline at the convention. The delay, however, was met with understanding from the audience, particularly given the substantial new content being added to justify the wait. The studio expressed initial concern about how fans would react to the news, but the room's response proved largely positive.
What's Coming in Danganronpa 2x2
The remake features more than just a fresh coat of paint on the original game. Key additions include:
- A complete overhaul of the world map with new gameplay mechanics
- The Slayhem Scenario โ a brand new story featuring the same characters, written in collaboration with Kodaka himself
- A story that's 20 percent longer than the original campaign
- Enhanced visuals and modernized gameplay systems
The Slayhem Scenario represents the primary focus of the remake project. While available from the start, the development team recommends players complete the original story first to fully appreciate the new narrative.
GTA 6 Among Recommended Alternatives
When addressing the delay, Kodaka suggested several titles to help fans pass the time, with Grand Theft Auto VI headlining the list. The recommendation positions Rockstar's highly anticipated open-world title as a substantial enough experience to bridge the gap until Danganronpa 2x2's Early 2027 arrival. Kodaka also mentioned The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy and Shuten Order as alternative ways to occupy gaming time during the wait.
A Milestone for Anime Expo
The Anime Expo 2026 panel marked a significant moment for both Spike Chunsoft and the gaming community. The studio's western branch has long used the convention as its primary announcement venue, and this year's presentation highlighted two major remakes: Danganronpa 2x2 and Steins;Gate Re:Boot. Both titles carry deep historical significance with the convention and its attendee community.
Notably, Steins;Gate Re:Boot was developed entirely without AI assistanceโa detail that received thunderous applause from the audience. The remake features redrawn art, new animated portraits, and includes previously unreleased content, including an epilogue scenario that hasn't seen a re-release in 15 years.
Looking Forward
With GTA 6 and other titles recommended as interim entertainment, fans now have a clear roadmap for the next several months. The Early 2027 window for Danganronpa 2x2 gives players ample time to explore Vice City and other gaming experiences before diving into the enhanced remake and its substantial new content.
